When a young person is in financial crisis, the basics can feel completely out of reach.

Here’s what our Emergency Relief program provides, who it’s for, and how to access it.

What is Emergency Relief and how does it work?

Sometimes the most important thing we can do for a young person is make sure they have food in their bag, a SmartRider in their pocket, and someone in their corner.

It sounds simple. But when you’re in financial crisis and trying to hold your life together, the basics can feel completely out of reach. A meal. A hygiene pack. Transport to a job interview or a medical appointment. Medication. These are not luxuries. They are the building blocks of stability. And without them, everything else in life becomes harder.

That is exactly what our Emergency Relief program exists to address.

What is Emergency Relief?

Our Emergency Relief program provides immediate, practical support to young people aged 15 to 25 across Perth who are experiencing financial hardship or crisis. It is designed to meet young people at the point of need — quickly, without judgement, and without barriers.

It is not a loan. It is not conditional on anything. It is support that shows up when a young person needs it most.

What can Emergency Relief help with?

Depending on what a young person needs, Emergency Relief can provide:

Food and essential care packages — Ready-made food packs and self-care essentials for young people who are not sure where their next meal is coming from.

Supermarket vouchers — giving young people the dignity of choosing what they need for themselves.

Hygiene items — the basics that are easy to take for granted when you have them, and very hard to manage without.

Clothing — particularly important for young people who need appropriate clothing for a job interview, a new workplace, or simply getting through the week.

Medication — support accessing prescriptions and medical essentials when cost is a barrier.

Transport — a SmartRider or fuel voucher to get to an appointment, an interview, a school enrolment, or a service that can help with the next step.

Nappies and Wipes — for young people with children

Referrals — when a young person needs more than immediate practical support, our team connects them to housing, education, mental health, and wellbeing services.

Who is it for?

Emergency Relief is available to any young person aged 15 to 25 across Perth. You do not need to be already connected to Youth Futures to access it. You do not need to have everything figured out or be able to explain your full situation in detail. You just need to reach out.

In 2025, we delivered over 250 Emergency Relief support sessions and provided 250 essential care packages to young people across Perth. Behind every one of those sessions was a person in a moment of real need — and a team that showed up for them without hesitation.

Why it matters

Financial crisis can hit any young person. Someone who has just left home for the first time. Someone who has recently lost a job. Someone navigating the gap between applying for Centrelink and receiving their first payment. Someone who is simply trying to get through the week.

When a young person in crisis can access immediate, practical support without judgement and without barriers, it does not just meet their immediate need. It builds trust. It keeps them connected to services. It gives them the breathing room to take the next step forward rather than just trying to survive today.

As our CEO Michelle Jenkins puts it: “Behind every statistic is a person. Behind every program is a team of people who chose, day after day, to show up.”

Emergency Relief is one of the most direct expressions of that commitment.

How to access Emergency Relief
